Superman Spence: UGA senior to run ultramarathon, raises awareness about Parkinson’s disease
Christian Spence described the moment his father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2019 as bittersweet.
“I was only 17 at the time, so I didn’t really understand the repercussions of what that was going to look like for my dad or my parents,” Spence said.
Spence is a senior majoring in biology with an emphasis in neuroscience at the University of Georgia. He studies Parkinson’s disease mechanisms as an undergraduate research assistant through the UGA Kanthasamy Lab.
In honor of his father, Mark, Spence partnered with the Parkinson’s Foundation to organize Going the Distance for PD, a fundraiser to spread awareness throughout the community about Parkinson’s disease. Spence plans to run the Longest Night 50K Ultramarathon in Greenville, South Carolina, on Dec. 16 — alongside fundraising $25,000.

Proposed quarry potentially threatens wildlife and Athens’ water supply
Just north of Athens-Clarke County, Vulcan Materials Company has proposed using roughly 1,000 acres of land with the expressed purpose of creating a gravel quarry. Although proposed to be built in Jackson County, Athens residents are expressing concern due to the quarry’s position beside about a mile of the North Oconee River.
Concerned parties say that the situation, which is just under two miles from Athens-Clarke County, creates a potential for impacts on Athens health and the environment.
