LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — YMCA of Greater Louisville will offer a Parkinson’s program in April to improve the quality of life for people suffering with the disease.
According to the National Institute of Aging, Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements like shaking, stiffness and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms typically begin gradually and worsen over time.
YMCA Total Movement with Parkinson’s program goes for 12 weeks at the Northeast Family YMCA at 9400 Millbrook Road and Southwest Family YMCA at 2800 Fordhaven Road. The program is designed for people living with idiopathic Parkinson’s.
According to a news release Wednesday, people meet with a healthy living coach to personalize a fitness plan, receive instruction on using equipment on the Wellness Floor and attend fitness classes including water, cycling, total body conditioning and group training. The instructors are certified to work with Parkinson’s patients.
Parkinson’s Foundation reports that nearly one million people in the U.S. are living with the disease, but the number is expected to rise to 1.2 million by 2030. Almost 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease annually. There are more than 13,000 Kentuckians diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
