Wrexham hold talks over Parkinson’s future as Ryan Reynolds watches third defeat

Wrexham have held talks over Phil Parkinson’s future as their poor start to the season continued, talkSPORT understands.

The Red Dragons’ wait for their first Championship victory at home stretched to three after a shock 3-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

The loss was the Welsh outfit’s third from their opening five league games, having won just once, with a minus two goal difference.

Wrexham currently hold the fourth and final relegation spot, with the only three teams below them being sides without any victories.

It is a far cry from what was expected this term, with the club investing heavily after ending a 43-year absence from the second tier.

Parkinson was handed a mammoth £30million outlay to strengthen his squad, having smashed their transfer record multiple times.

According to Transfermarkt, they were even above Barcelona, Aston Villa, Rangers, and Celtic for the biggest net spend this summer.

However, spending has yet to yield results on the pitch, with co-owner Ryan Reynolds watching the loss to QPR at the Stok Cae Ras.

Hollywood owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have overseen three successive promotions to reach the Championship.

Parkinson has been in the dugout for the entirety of that rise, cementing his place in Red Dragons folklore since arriving in 2021.

Reynolds and McElhenney have remained loyal to the 57-year-old, but have made no secret of their Premier League ambitions.

The Wrexham owners have also shown a ruthless edge in their top-flight pursuit, having moved on former goalscoring heroes, Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, this summer.

Parkinson under pressure at Wrexham

The strikeforce duo scored a combined over 154 goals between them in the lower divisions, but fell down the pecking order last season.

Mullin was sent out on loan to League One side Wigan Athletic, with Palmer joining Swindon Town in the fourth tier last month.

Parkinson, meanwhile, is the latest to find his future the subject of internal talks at Wrexham following the 3-1 home loss to QPR.

Ahead of Saturday’s match, the Welsh giants had conceded the highest xG (expected goals) in the division while facing more shots than any of their Championship rivals.

Those frailties were laid bare by QPR, with summer signing Conor Coady even scoring an own-goal during the humbling defeat.

Parkinson’s Championship managerial record

It continues a worrying trend for the Englishman in the Championship, having last managed in the second tier with Bolton.

Having helped the Wanderers secure League One promotion in 2017, Parkinson masterminded a dramatic Championship survival on the final day in his second campaign.

Yet financial struggles played a part in Bolton’s relegation the following season, with Parkinson managing at the lower levels since.

His Championship record stands at just 27 wins, 38 draws, and a whopping 81 defeats from 146 games in charge at second-tier level.
