Michael J Fox shares Parkinson's 'challenges' ahead of Future Boy book launch

Michael J. Fox has shared the challenges of living with Parkinson’s, ahead of the launch of his new book, Future Boy.

In an exclusive interview with People, Fox spoke about how he responds to the ‘physical’ challenges of living with the condition.

He also shared his desire to fulfill fans’ “wish to know more about the experience” of filming the much-loved movie, Back to the Future.

Fox’s new book is a humorous memoir of the Hollywood star’s iconic roles as Alex Keaton in Family Ties and Marty McFly in Back to the Future.

The star also spoke about his upcoming return to TV in season three of Shrinking, having retired from acting in 2020.

Michael J Fox: physical challenges of Parkinson’s

In the interview, the actor, author and Parkinson’s advocate spoke of the need to listen to his body each morning before deciding what to do.

“I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it,” he told the title.

“I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it. I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to.”

With his trademark enthusiasm, he added: “You take the good, and you seize it.”

Fox, who publicly shared his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1991, aged 29, and founded the Michael J Fox Foundation in 2000.

The launch comes at the end of successful year for Michael J Fox, who was among 19 new recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony in January.

As well as celebrating his contribution to culture, the award acknowledged the star’s ‘undaunted resilience and optimism’, stating he ‘warms hearts and captivates audiences as a fearless advocate for those with Parkinson’s, channeling his endearing personality to advance treatments, move us closer to a cure, and remind us of the power of American possibilities’.

Future Boy’ by Michael J Fox is available to buy from 14 October.
