What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a severe neurodegenerative condition that is known to be extremely progressive in nature. When affected, the patient may develop severe issues in managing the body’s natural ability to move properly and to maintain proper coordination.

According to the experts, Parkinson’s is a disease that mainly affects people above 50-60 -typically an old-age health issue. However, once diagnosed with this conditon, the patient may suffer from serious symptoms including neurological degradation, being unable to move properly, unable to walk and even face difficulties while talking.

“Parkinson’s occurs when certain nerve cells present inside the brain, also called neurons in medical terms (a part of the substantia nigra) get damaged or unexpectedly die due to any external and internal triggers.”

These neurons are the ones that take care of the responsibilities for producing dopamine – a chemical messenger that plays a crucial role in controlling smooth and balanced muscle movements. Studies have shown that a sudden drop in dopamine levels is the most triggering part for a patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease. “When the dopamine level drops in individuals with Parkinson’s, they begin to experience both motor and non-motor symptoms that gradually worsen over time”.
