Leisure centre in Watford launches Parkinson’s exercise programme to improve symptoms

A new exercise program, called the STABLE program, is set to launch in January 2024 to improve symptoms for people with Parkinson’s.

Everyone Active, Watford Borough Council, Parkinson UK, and Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust are collaborating to offer an eight-week schedule of functional group exercise sessions at Watford Woodside Leisure Centre, funded by Parkinsons UK.

The sessions will be specifically tailored for individuals whose balance is mildly affected or those who experience challenges due to slower movements, reduced self-confidence, or smaller movements.

The programme will include a range of targeted exercises and activities to help day to day tasks such as sitting to standing, getting in and out of the car, writing, dressing, handling money, navigating crowded spaces and engaging in various work or leisure activities.

Leanne Rodriguez-Reid, Contract Activity & Wellbeing Manager at Everyone Active, said: “Being physically active can play an important role in living well with Parkinson’s, for which there is currently no cure, and is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world.

“The STABLE programme seeks to empower individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease to better manage their condition through the proven benefits of regular physical activity.

“Research indicates that staying active can slow the disease process, alleviate pain, and enhance independent mobility, contributing to an improved quality of life, so we are absolutely thrilled to launch this new programme.”

The programme not only emphasises the importance of physical activity for individuals with Parkinson’s but also provides practical guidance on initiating and sustaining a personalised exercise routine.

Attendees are referred to the programme by the West Hertfordshire Neurological Service at Central London Community Healthcare.
